On Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at 4 pm in the O'Hara Student Center Ballroom, Theresa Brown will officially kick off the Year of the Humanities in the University at Pitt by reading from her new book The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives.

Theresa Brown (Ph.D. in English, University of Chicago; B.S. in Nursing, University of Pittsburgh), a practicing clinical nurse and nationally known writer, has written extensively for the New York Times and other venues about patients, families, caregivers, illness, and the U.S. health care system: to a great extent, what Being Human means as people face some of their greatest challenges. She has also spoken about the value of the humanities to the health care professions, and issues of morality and ethics in health care and end-of-life decisions.

Brown will publish her second book on September 22, 2015. The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives (Algonquin Press, 2015) is a vivid memoir covering one day in the life of an oncology nurse. As the kick-off event to the Year of Humanities in the University, she will read from her new book and give a talk.
